Spring has arrived and all across Chicago motorcycles are getting back onto the roads. Before you set off on your first big trip of the season it is a great idea to follow the check-list below.
Check your Fuel:
Gas doesn’t spoil like milk, but when left for several months you might be better off draining the tank and fuel lines before running the engine.
Check the oil:
You should at least check the oil level before riding, but this might be a perfect time to do an oil and filter change. This is due to the fact that oil degrades over time, even if it has just been sitting, especially when exposed to temperature changes.
Check the Battery:
Motorcycle batteries tend to be smaller than those in cars; so they can lose their charge quickly, especially in cold weather. If you went months without starting your bike and did not kept your battery trickle charger, there is a very good chance the motorcycle will not start. The problem is, when a battery goes completely dead for an extended amount of time, it is possible that even with a “Jump” the battery will not be able to hold a charge.
Check your Tires:
Clearly driving takes the biggest bite out of the life of your tires, but even sitting can cause ware. Odds are your tires are in pretty much the same as when you last drove, but it is wise to inspect them before riding. Rubber can dry-out and cracks or flat spots can develop on your tires. At very least, assume that you will need to put some air in them.
This is a great time to check you helmet:
Make sure the fit is proper and that it has not been damaged over the long winter.
Many bike owners might be shocked to find that the price of Motorcycle Insurance is affected more by the “Style” of the bike than the “Cost” of the bike. This is important fact to consider before coming home with that new “SPORT BIKE.
Over the years I have had frequent conversations with people that went out and bought a new Kawasaki Ninja 650, or Yamaha YZF-R1 only to find after calling around, that the insurance is more per month than the cost of the bike. This is particularity true when you have the combination of a “Sport Bike” and a young driver.
Contained in this website are many pages of information that can assist in selecting a Motorcycle that will be a “Good fit” and then help you save money on your insurance for that cycle.
