What is SR22 Insurance?
SR22 Insurance is a proof of car insurance that derives its name from the form used by insurance companies to notify the Secretary of State that you have the required coverage. Your auto insurance company will file a certificate of financial responsibility with your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to establish legal proof of automobile liability insurance.
What is Liability Insurance?
Insurance designed to cover the damages a policyholder is legally obligated to pay because of bodily injury caused to another person and/or to their property. Liability Insurance is mandatory in the State of Illinois, the required minimum limits are: $25,000 Bodily Injury per person, $50,000 Bodily Injury per
Accident, and $20,000 of Property Damage, with matching limits for Uninsured Motorist coverage.
What is an SR-22 Form?
The name of the form used by insurance companies to notify the state that the insured has the required insurance coverage. People will sometime refer this car insurance as SR-22, or FR Filing or sometimes as just “Filing” insurance. While insurance is mandatory in Illinois, most drivers are not required to purchase SR22 insurance.
What actually is an SR22 Form?
The SR in SR22 stands for Safety Responsibility. Over the years the name has changed, in fact there are still many that use the term FR – short for “Financial Responsible” insurance – but the purpose remains the same – to establish legal proof of insurance.
Do I Need SR-22 Insurance?
While Liability Insurance is mandatory in the State of Illinois, most drivers are not required to file a SR22 certificate. If you are required to get an SR-22,you will be notified either by a court order or your state’s DMV.
Common reasons include:
- Having an accident while uninsured.
- Being convicted of DUI or DWI.
- Getting caught driving without a valid license or insurance.
- Receiving multiple, and/or serious, moving violations over a relatively short period.
- License suspension or revocation.
How to Get an SR-22?
The process of obtaining an SR22 is handled by your insurance company.
The first step is to notify your insurance agent or, in some cases, directly with your insurance company that you need an SR-22 form filed. Not all insurers will file an SR22 form, if yours does not, or if you an currently uninsured, you will need to shop for a company that specializes in higher-risk drivers. Purchase a policy that meets your state’s minimum liability requirements. If you don’t own a car, yet are still required to show proof of a financial responsibility, you will need to purchase a non-owner SR-22 policy which will provide liability coverage when you drive a borrowed or rented vehicle. Please note, Non-Owners policies do not cover vehicles for which you are a regular, customary, driver.
Pay the filing fee (directly with the Secretary of State).
