Terms and Information for Tow Trucks and Flat Beds

Actual Cash Value

A form of insurance that pays damages equal to the replacement value of damaged property minus depreciation.

Car-On-Hook coverage.(Also GKLL)

The “On- Hook” coverage must be no less than $25,000. This covers damages to the vehicle being towed.

Garage Liability 
Garage liability insurance covers bodily injury and property damage caused by your shop’s operations. For a towing service that includes third party claims
that occurred while loading and unloading a vehicle, jumping a customers battery, changing a tire, or other similar services.

Compulsory Insurance Limits for Towing Insurance

The minimum amount of auto liability insurance that meets a state law. In Illinois the requirements are $500,000 CSL (Combined) Bodily injury and Property Damage.
If a Towing company falls under the control of the ICC (Illinois Commerce Commission, or Inter State Commerce Commission) then the limits of liability increase to $750,000 CSL.
Towing companies are also required to carry matching Limits of Garage Liability ( At least $500,000 CSL) Companies needing TW Plates for their Wrecker and Flatbed are also obligated
to purchase Car-On-Hook coverage. The “On- Hook” coverage must be no less than $25,000.

Garagekeepers Legal Liability (GKLL)

Garagekeepers (often called GKLL), differs from the mandatory Garage Liability since it  strictly covers vehicles being parked and stored in your lot

Full Coverage

For Commercial trucks the rate is based on a % of the “Stated Value.”

Limits

Maximum amount of insurance that can be paid for a covered loss. For towing companies the Limits are Combined Single Limits (CSL) rather than Split Limits.
